Continuous-Time Spatiotemporal Calibration of a Rolling Shutter Camera-IMU System

The Rolling Shutter (RS) mechanism is widely used in consumer-grade cameras, which are essential parts smartphones and autonomous vehicles. RS leads to image distortion when the camera moves relative scene while capturing images. This effect needs be considered structure-from-motion, vision-aided odometry, for recent studies have extended Global (GS) methods cameras. So far, it has been unclear how affects spatiotemporal calibration of a multi-sensor system, crucial good performance aforementioned applications. work takes camera-IMU system as an example looks into its calibration. We develop continuous-time method based on basis splines by using target. Considering RS, every observation landmark target corresponds unique pose fitted B-splines. Tests conducted simulated data generated from public datasets showed that can noticeably affect accuracy extrinsic parameters, causing errors about 0.5° orientation 2 cm translation with setting common smartphone With real collected two industrial systems, we found considering gives more accurate consistent These tests also revealed impact alternative IMU models versus discrete-time representation calibration, degradation visual inertial odometry errors.
